Bleak response to Kerala Governor's call for 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day'

While BJP's student outfit ABVP organised the remembrance at a few campuses, which even led to tension, majority of the campuses did not organise any function.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar's directive to the universities in the state to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day received lukewarm response from the colleges.

While RSS student outfit ABVP organised the remembrance at a few campuses, which even led to tension, majority of the campuses did not organise any function.

Countering the Governor's directive by exercising his powers as chancellor, state higher education minister R Bindu, in her power as pro-chancellor had directed the universities not to organise Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi VIjayan had also flayed that the Governor's directive was yet another way to implement the Sangh Parivar agenda.

A section of students at the Central University in Kasargod reportedly organised the Partition Horrors Day.

ABVP activists at the Govinda Pai Memorial government college at Manjeshwar in Kasargod also held posters to observe the Partition Horror Day, which led to tension after activists of SFI, CPI(M)'s students wing, destroyed the posters.

ABVP said in a statement that despite the state government's prohibition, Partition Horrors Day was observed at some campuses.
