<p>Thiruvananthapuram: A convict in a brutal sexual assault case that resulted in the death of a woman train passenger in Kerala, who had escaped from the Kannur central prison during the wee hours of Friday, was arrested shortly after fleeing following a massive search launched by the police. </p><p>Tamil Nadu native Govindachami, who was got a life term in the brutal rape of a 23-year-old girl in a train in Thrissur in 2011, escaped by cutting the cell's door and scaling the huge walls of the prison during the wee hours of Friday. The incident raised many eyebrows as Govindachami is differently-abled, with only one hand. His left hand was amputated. </p><p>Moreover, the prison boasts of high security features like electric fencing. Subsequently, some local people spotted him walking along the road in Kannur city, following which they alerted the police. </p><p>Govindachamy who tried to hide in the premises of a vacant building was held from the well located in the premises.</p><p>Kannur city Police Commissioner Nidhinraj P said that some tools used for the jailbreak were recovered from him. </p><p>Prima facie he is suspected of making preparations for the jailbreak over the last 20 days. Further investigation will be carried out to find out if he got the help of any others. </p><p>Four prison officials who were on duty, meanwhile, have been placed under suspension and a detailed investigation is under way. </p><p>Though the trial court and Kerala HC awarded a death sentence to Govindachamy, the Supreme Court commuted it to a life-term citing lack of evidence for murder. </p><p>He was involved in over a dozen crimes in various states. </p>
