Brain-dead pregnant woman delivers baby boy through C-section; family donates her organs: Report

After the woman's husband and father received a counselling, they provided their consent for the woman's organ donation.

A 25-year-old woman who was in her ninth month of pregnancy delivered a baby boy through C-section after meeting with an accident.

The woman, who was declared brain dead after her delivery, had met with a road accident in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar on January 20, when she was travelling pillion on a two-wheeler with her husband.

According to a report by Indian Express, Central Coordinator at the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre, Aarti Gokhale said that the woman was travelling pillion with her husband on a scooter when they met with an accident.

Having suffered severe head injuries, the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was initially treated for the same later shifted to a private hospital in Pune.

According to a report by the Times of India, a craniotomy and later a C-section were done on the woman by doctors at the private hospital to save the baby.

However, the woman was declared brain dead, a news which the woman's family refused to accept and believe.

The woman's family took her to DPU Super Specialty Hospital in Pune's Pimpri Chichwad using an advanced life support ambulance, where their hearts and hopes were shattered after the doctors corroborated the diagnosis of the previous hospital.

A doctor said, "Even after receiving the best possible medical and surgical treatment, she could not be saved."

After the woman's husband and father received counselling, they provided their consent for the woman's organ donation.

According to TOI, Dr Vrishali Patil, HOD of Multi Organ Transplant at the DPU Super Specialty Hospital said, "The decision to donate organs in such a tragic situation demonstrates extraordinary courage and compassion. One kidney and liver were allocated to two patients in need at DPU Super Specialty Hospital who underwent transplant on January 24. Her another kidney was allocated to the common pool through the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre. This was transplanted into a patient on January 24. Her corneas have been stored at the hospital's eye bank."

Pro-chancellor at Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Dr Bhagyashree Patil said, "This remarkable display of generosity and courage in the face of tragedy is a testament to the human spirit. We honour the memory of the young mother who has given new life to others."
