New Delhi: Five judges of the Supreme Court led by Justice B R Gavai visited violence-affected Manipur on Saturday and virtually inaugurated free legal services camps, free medical camps and four legal aid clinics from Churachandpur.

Justice Gavai highlighted that the Constitution guarantees all citizens access to justice in a speedy and affordable manner. To fulfill this, NALSA reaches out to the remotest areas of the country, he said.

"A just society is built on principles like accessibility to justice, healthcare, and opportunities that empower individuals. Internally displaced persons, who are among the most vulnerable, face significant challenges in rebuilding their lives. It is our moral and constitutional duty to ensure that they are not left behind in this process," he said.

The legal services institutions will also play a crucial role in ensuring that displaced individuals receive their rightful entitlements.

The Special Legal Aid Clinics set up by MASLSA within the displaced communities will offer free legal assistance, empowering people to seek justice and protect their rights. He urged all displaced individuals to take advantage of these services and assured them that Legal Services Institutions stand with them in their journey towards rebuilding their lives.

Justice Gavai further stated that as Manipur is part of India it is everybody's home and appealed to all the citizens of India to help in rebuilding and restoring peace in the northeastern state.

In the historic event, Justices Vikram Nath, M M Sundresh, K V Viswanathan, and N Kotiswar Singh, all judges of Supreme Court accompanied Justice Gavai.

Justice D Krishnakumar, Chief Justice, High Court of Manipur, Justice A Bimol Singh, judge, High Court of Manipur cum Executive Chairman, MASLSA, Justice A Guneshwar Sharma, judge, High Court of Manipur, Mrs Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu, judge, High Court of Manipur were present at the occasion.

The mega medical camp were conducted in 106 relief camps covering the entire 290 different relief camps by clubbing adjoining relief camps together. Around 400 medical doctors and 800 supporting staff were engaged for conducting the mega medical camp for the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The four legal aid clinics were inaugurated at LMS Law College, Nongpok Sanjenbam, Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar, Imphal and Somdal village, Ukhrul.

The inaugural function was attended by Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Judicial Officers, Senior Advocates, Members of the Bar, officials of District Administration, representatives of various departments, PLVs, internally displaced persons of the relief camp and representatives of print and electronic media.

The judges of the Supreme Court distributed Sanad of 41 newly enrolled Advocates from Churachandpur and study materials to the re-enrolled students. Relief materials consisting of jumbo boxes, mosquito nets, emergency lamps and milk powders for infants and children, buckets, mugs, and diapers were also distributed to IDPs both at Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts.

Supreme Court judges led by Justice Gavai also inspected the Relief Camps at Sadbhavna Mandap Relief Camp, Tuibong, Churachandpur District and Moirang College, Relief Camp at Bishnupur District, stated a press release.
