Pahalgam terror attack | Opposition MPs seek special Parliament session to send 'message of unity'

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MPs Manoj K Jha of RJD and P Sandosh Kumar of CPI on Monday wrote letters to the Modi government seeking a Special Session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and send a message of unity.

In his letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the RJD MP said the Parliament stands as the cornerstone of the Republic and the highest form of democratic expression.

"In moments of such profound national pain, it is within Parliament that the anxieties, hopes, and resolve of the people must find their fullest voice. At this time of grief and testing, Parliament must come together to pay heartfelt homage to the victims of the Pahalgam attack, honour their memory, and reaffirm our shared commitment to the ideals of unity, justice, and peace," Jha said.

He said it is essential that the government takes the nation and its elected representatives into full confidence in moments such as these.

"Transparent dialogue and open engagement across political lines strengthen the people's trust in democratic institutions and reinforce the collective resolve needed to overcome adversity... It is this spirit that I respectfully urge you to convene a Special Session of Parliament, dedicated exclusively to an open and principled discussion on the Pahalgam attack and its broader implications for the security, well-being, and aspirations of the people of India," he said.

"Such a session would send a powerful and reassuring message: that our democracy remains resilient and that our commitment to every part of our Union, especially those most affected by violence, is unwavering," Jha added.

CPI Rajya Sabha floor leader Sandosh Kumar said a Special Session would allow MPs across party lines to come together in one voice to mourn the loss, express the will of the nation, and send a clear and strong message that India remains united, resilient, and resolute against those who seek to harm India through acts of terror.

"Parliament should rise above political divides to embody the spirit and aspirations of the people. At this moment of national mourning, a collective expression of solidarity from the highest forum of democracy would be both timely and necessary," he said.

He said the tragic incident has not only caused immense sorrow to the victims and their kin but has also shaken the collective conscience of our nation.

In these difficult times, he said it is imperative that Parliament, which is the "supreme voice of the people", comes together in solidarity to express profound grief, pay homage to the victims, and reiterate our nation’s unyielding resolve against terrorism.
