Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan is contesting from two assembly segments Bhimavaram in West Godavari and Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam. Contrary to his dream to build a casteless society, Pawan finally succumbed to the caste lure and chose segments that have Kapu community in the majority. Pawan’s elder brother and founder of Praja Rajyam Party K Chiranjeevi in 2009 contested from two segments Palakollu and Tirupati where Kapus are in majority. He lost Palakollu considered as his home turf and won Tirupati in Chittoor district.
.
In Bhimavaram Pawan has the advantage of being a local man as his family belongs to Mogaltur which comes under the Narsapuram Lok Sabha segment. Pawan fielded his brother and actor Nagababu as Loksabha candidate from Narsapuram to further consolidate his grip on Bhimavaram. However, in Bhimavaram all the main contestants belong to the Kapu community leaving no specific advantage to the star. There are at least 70,000 Kapus in Bhimavaram assembly constituency and split is inevitable.
.
Congress won from this rich segment for seven and TDP won five times. In 2014 Pulaparti Ramanjaneyulu of TDP won the seat. He is contesting again. Granthi Srinivas of YSRCP is also re-contesting. Even though Pawan has a mass fan base in the region and in Bhimavaram town the influence of the rich Kshatriya community cannot be underestimated. Janasena Party being the new entrant also has no booth level cadre like the other two parties.
.
Another safe haven for Pawan Kalyan with over 55,000 Kapu votes is Gajuwaka. In 2009 Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party candidate won from here making it amply clear why Pawan has chosen Gajuwaka. Sitting TDP MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao and Tippala Nagireddy of YSRCP are the other contestants from this segment. The semi-urban Gajuwaka also has a considerable number of fans for Pawan Kalyan and the recent roadshow along with BSP chief Mayawati in Visakhapatnam helped Pawan to boost the morale of the cadre.
.
The presence of former Joint Director of CBI, VV Lakshminarayana as Janasena's Loksabha candidate from Visakhapatnam helped the party by attracting the educated and upper middle castes.
