Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a meeting to review the implementation of the announcements he made during this year’s Independence Day speech.

Senior PMO members, including Principal Secretary P K Mishra and Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba were present.

In his speech this year, Modi spoke about ensuring affordable credit to the poor and middle-class for housing facilities. He also spoke about providing solar power for households.

In the meeting, Modi reviewed preparations for the execution of these two schemes.

As the PM said that for the weaker sections and middle-class families, buying a house of their own is a huge dream he mentioned a scheme that would benefit families in cities residing in rented homes, slums and chawls.

“We will come up with a new scheme which will benefit families living in cities that reside in rented houses, slums, chawls and unauthorised colonies. If they want to build their own houses, we will provide them financial assistance and give them relief in interest rates and loans from banks that will help them save lakhs of rupees,” Modi had said.

Modi also said that in the last five years, under his governance over 13.5 crore poor people have come out of poverty.

“Government’s every moment, every rupee is going towards the welfare of citizens. The government and citizens are united with the spirit of the ‘nation first’,” Modi had said. He had also added that in the last 9 years of his government, the income tax bracket for middle-class families went up from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 7 lakh.

During the speech, he also spoke about ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’. “We have presented philosophies and the world is now connecting with India over them. For the renewable energy sector, we said 'One Sun, One World, One Grid'. After Covid, we told the world that our approach should be of ‘One Earth, One Health’,” he had said.
