2026 is the time to remove DMK government which failed to protect women: Vijay

Chennai: On International Women’s Day, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay asked women in Tamil Nadu to take pledge to vote out of power the DMK government led by Chief Minister M K Stalin for failing to protect their safety.

Vijay’s video message comes on the heels of allegations by Opposition parties that crimes against women in Tamil Nadu were on the rise.

The actor had been accusing the DMK government of failing to ensure the safety of women and had met Governor R N Ravi with regard to the sexual assault of a student at Anna University.

“Are you happy? I know we can realise the feeling of happiness only if we feel we are protected. When there is no such feeling and insecurity is the order of the day, happiness is bound to be missing. What to do? It was we who voted the DMK government to power but only now do we realise that they have cheated us,” Vijay said.

“Change is the only thing that is constant. In 2026, let us see to it that this government which failed to protect women is voted out of power,” the actor-politician added.

Vijay’s attack against the DMK is unsurprising as he has identified the ruling party as his political opponent. TVK has also announced that it will contest the 2026 elections in Tamil Nadu on its own without an alliance with established parties like the AIADMK.
