Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday said his government used Ru (first letter of the Tamil word roobai for currency) in place of the official Devanagari-based rupee symbol ₹ in the logo for 2025-2026 Budget only to demonstrate the state’s “commitment” towards” the language policy.

Stalin also took a swipe at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for reacting to the decision seeking to know why she chose to comment on this issue but not to umpteen requests from the state government to release funds for paying wages to workers under MGNREGA, to handle disasters, and for the school education department.

Nirmala Sitharaman had termed the row as “a completely avoidable example of language and regional chauvinism.”
.Pinarayi expresses solidarity with Stalin's JAC meeting to oppose delimitation.
In his Ungalil Oruvan (One Amongst You) series, Stalin spoke in detail about the 2025-2026 Budget presented by Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu on March 14 was prepared after consultations with Nobel Laureate Esther Duflo, and noted economists like Raghuram Rajan, and Arvind Subramanian to ensure that it catered to every section of the society.

Answering a question on his tweet that introduced the logo becoming a national news, Stalin said he merely introduced the Budget logo which used the Tamil word Ru. “We used Ru to demonstrate our commitment towards the two-language (Tamil & English) policy of Tamil Nadu. That’s all. But people who don’t like the Tamil language made it big news,” the Chief Minister said.
.
Stalin said he had written over 100 times to the Union Government seeking funds for the state, but he never got a response.

“The Finance Minister who never spoke about my requests decided to respond on this issue. She herself has used Ru to denote rupees in Tamil several times in the past. It is very common for people to write Rs in English. But this became a huge issue. In short, both the Budget and Tamil (language) became a hit across the country,” he added.
.
The Stalin dispensation took a political decision to use Ru to ensure that Tamil gets more importance in the state.

The symbolic change added yet another dimension to the ongoing debate over Tamil Nadu’s refusal to adopt the three-language formula proposed in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The Budget asserted that the state’s two-language policy will never be altered and allotted funds from its exchequer to compensate for Rs 2,152 crore withheld by the Union Government under the Samagra Shiksha (SS) scheme for refusing to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Thenarasu also articulated the state government’s position that there was no way that the three-language formula proposed by the NEP will be implemented even if it meant forgoing the funds due from the Union Government.
