Boyfriend of RG Kar medical student arrested after her mysterious death in Bengal's Malda

Kolkata: The police arrested a junior doctor on Sunday after the mysterious death of a student of the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) in Kolkata brought the institution back under the spotlight a little more than a year after the rape and murder of one of its postgraduate trainee medics triggered widespread outrage.

Ujjwal Soren, a junior doctor at the Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in northern West Bengal, was arrested in connection with the mysterious death of Anindita Tudu, a 24-year-old fourth-year MBBS student at the RGKMCH.

Ujjwal was named an accused in the FIR Anindita’s mother Alpana Tudu lodged at the English Bazar Police Station in Malda.

Alpana accused Ujjwal of poisoning Anindita, who, according to her, was pressing him to get their marriage — apparently solemnised in a temple in Odisha's Puri — officially registered, while he was trying to delay it.

Anindita went to Malda a few days ago to meet Ujjwal, who then informed her parents that she had fallen sick. They rushed to the MMCH, where they had found their daughter in a very critical condition. She died late on Friday.

Police sources said the initial probe suggested Anindita died due to a drug overdose, but only the post-mortem examination report would reveal the actual cause of death.
