Nepal flash flood death toll could touch 66: police

Last Updated 04 May 2018, 06:12 IST

The death toll in the flash flood near the famous tourist hot spot of Pokhara in western Nepal could be as high as 66 as chances are slim to find 40 people, including three Ukrainians, who went missing in the disaster.

"So far 26 dead bodies were recovered from the Seti river bank near the Khara market and there was very slim chances of finding alive 40 others who went missing," said Shailesh Thapa, the Superintendent of Police.

"Now it has been four days since the flood hit the area, but we are still continuing the rescue works to recover dead bodies," Thapa said. Of the 26 dead bodies only 19 could be recognised as they were badly scarred and swollen, most of them were to be of local villages, he said.

Till today, eight people have been rescued from the area, said the senior police official. A glacial lake burst on May 5 in the high Himalayan region had swept away houses, farms, cattles near Pokhara.
