For those who are looking for a holiday that’s both relaxing and adventurous, Honnemaradu is the answer. This serene place, situated in the backwaters of River Sharavathi and overlooking the Linganamakki Dam, offers plenty of activities for adventure enthusiasts in the form of swimming, trekking, boating, canoeing, kayaking and camping. Located in the Sagar town of Shivamogga district, Honnemaradu is also a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Honnemaradu literally means ‘golden lake’ and has a number of lush green islands spread out in the backwaters. These islands are perfect for camping. First things first: head into the water and enjoy a good swim in the cool, refreshing waters of River Sharavathi. Even those who don’t know swimming can head into the water with life jackets. You can also try your hand at boating and kayaking. But, end the day with camping and a bonfire.

Away from all the pollution of urban cities, Honnemaradu offers plenty of opportunities to gaze at the spectacular night sky. Do not miss Bheemana Hejje, which the locals believe are the actual footprints of Bheema. Since Jog Falls is close by (15 km), do not miss it. It’s India’s second-highest plunge waterfall and has been the backdrop for many movies. The area doesn’t boast of many resorts or homestays. There’s only one setup, an ecotourism unit, run by a couple known as ‘The Adventurers’ who offer packages for various adventure activities.
