Hero Abhinandan sets moustache trend in city

His gunslinger style is all the rage at some salons across Bengaluru.

Nanesh Thakur (behind) gave over 650 people a look similar to that of Abhinandan free of cost.

IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman has set the fashion agenda of the season with his trademark moustache.

The country is impressed with how he shot down an F16 plane and carried himself with dignity when he was held captive in Pakistan.

IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman has become a
fashion icon of sorts for young men who are rushing
to get his ‘gunslinger’ moustache.

His haircut and gunslinger moustache is all the rage in Bengaluru.

Nanesh Thakur of Nanesh Hair Salon & Spa decided to give anyone who walked in a free ‘Abhinandan cut’ on Monday.

He gave 650 people a makeover. “My staff and I started working at 6 am and we finished only by 6 pm. We wanted to do something special for our hero but we never expected so many people to participate,” Thakur told Metrolife.

His salon usually charges Rs 500 to Rs 900 for a haircut but this was a special day. In fact, even the women who walked in got free services that day.

“We didn’t want to charge anyone on that day. I guess it turned out well for those who just came for their regular services,” Thakur says, laughing.

Customers who walked in were mostly between 20 and 35. About 110 chose to get the gunslinger moustache done that day.

Thakur is happy he has done his bit. In fact, his stint on Monday got him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for giving the most number of haircuts in a day.

South likes it straight

By and large, South Indians love the thin, straight moustache. Almost all Kannada film stars sport it: Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh. Curiously, younger stars such as Sudeep, Ganesh and Yash sport moustaches with beards. Salman’s Khan middle-parting looking in ‘Tere Naam’ was popular for sometime after the film was released in 2003. The movie flopped, but the hairstyle clicked.

Aamir Khan made a statement with his hairstyle in ‘Ghajini’. It became all the rage. Stylists were probably tired of giving the semi-bald buzz cut!

While Elvis Presley popularised thick sideburns, Amitabh Bachchan and other actors made it popular in India. Sideburns were never complete without long hair. From puffy hair to poker straight hair, Bollywood actresses like Zeenat Aman, Neetu Singh, Dimple Kapadia and younger generation actresses like Karisma Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit have set the trend.

Singham style Abhinandan’s style was earlier tried out by Suriya in ‘Singham’ and Ambareesh in ‘Diggajaru’.
