22-yr-old alleges rape by 40 men for four days

Last Updated 20 July 2018, 20:13 IST

A 22-year old Chandigarh woman was gang-raped by nearly 40 people in the Morni foot hill area near Chandigarh for four days continuously before she was threatened and allowed to leave on Friday.

The woman is married and underwent medical treatment for the ordeal she was forced to bear for days.

According to the woman, she was kept sedated by the accused. Every day 9 to 10 people would visit the premises and took turns to rape her.

The incident has also exposed the laxity of the Panchkula police in Haryana.

After the rape victim and her husband approached the police with their plaint, they were driven away by them and asked to go to Chandigarh to file the case since they lived there.

Two policemen, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Morni and a lady sub-inspector at the woman police station, have been suspended for the reported inaction on their part.

The Chandigarh police was quick to register a rape case against the accused on the complaint by the victim, even as the case did not fall within its jurisdiction.

Three persons, including the main accused Sunny, have been arrested.

Hunt is on for the other accused, the police said.

According to the police, several people from various places would pay the main accused on being called by him and his accomplices to the guest house in Morni.

They would then take turns to rape the woman.

The victim’s husband said he was approached by the main accused a few days ago.

The accused told him that he would pay Rs 12,000 to his wife for daily chores.

Panchkula took pride after the first all-woman police station in India was inaugurated last year.

Friday’s incident has defamed it, especially in light of the reported laxity of the police officers.
