Airport Authority of India (AAI) and UNDP has launched a project to empower 15 villages near Guwahati airport by providing digital literacy, clean energy and quality healthcare.

The project was launched on Saturday as part of AAI's CSR project, which will be implemented by the UNDP.

The project named Resilience Building of Communities around Guwahati Airport aims to empower 15 villages in Rani development block in Kamrup district, close to the airport. "It will cover digital literacy, access to clean drinking water, sanitation and quality healthcare along with access to clean energy. We have distributed a computer set each to five schools in Rani development block on Saturday as part of the project," Northeast regional head of UNDP, John Borgoyary said.

D. K. Kamra, regional Executive director of AAI, said that adequate number of solar lanterns would be distributed to the beneficiaries under the project. He also said that the project is one of the best CSR initiatives to have been undertaken by AAI in the North-east region.

With over 120 commercial flights operating daily, Guwahati airport became the eighth busiest airport in the country, the AAI said recently.

Flight movement between Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati and rest of the country has increased in the past five years, prompting the AAI to go for expansion of its airports in the region.
