Aam Aadmi Party MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi was arrested on Thursday in a two-year-old rioting case after a court ordered sent him to two days’ judicial custody when he failed to appear before it.

A non-bailable warrant was issued against the Model Town MLA by the metropolitan magistrate of Rohini court on Tuesday. The case dates back to the time when Tripathi was not an MLA.

According to the police, a case was registered against Tripathi and four others on March 9, 2013, at Adarsh Nagar police station following allegations that a day earlier, AAP supporters had gathered at GT Karnal Road near Lal Bagh Azadpur and a scuffle ensued with one Bittu Jha. The FIR states that during the scuffle, Tripathi assaulted Jha, who was injured.

In another case, advocate Vivek Garg had filed a complaint against Tripathi alleging that he unlawfully obtained medical claim for his mother in August. The complaint stated that in the affidavits filed along with his nomination papers for the Delhi Assembly polls in 2013 and 2015, Tripathi had declared that his parents were not dependent on him.

However, after being elected to the Assembly, Tripathi obtained a medical card from the Assembly secretariat and got the names of his parents included in it.
