Adivasi girl gang-raped; dies

A 16-year-old girl hailing from the Adivasi community, who was reportedly gang-raped by two men of her native Sipling village in Dharmapuri district, died at a hospital on Saturday.

This has triggered a massive outrage in Tamil Nadu.

The district police intensified the hunt to nab the men only after the news of the girl's death made it to the headlines.

By Sunday evening only one of the reported perpetrator, Satheesh, was picked up from his hideout.

Both the accused are said to be distant relatives of the victim.

The victim, who was staying at a government home and studying in Class XII at a government school in Paapireddipatti, had come home to her village to celebrate Deepavali last week.

The minor was reportedly gang-raped by Satheesh and Ramesh, when she went to the fields to relieve herself on November 5.

After the incident, the minor girl was unwell, very weak and complained of severe head ache, she underwent extensive tests at the government medical college hospital in Dharmapuri, but nothing substantive came out of them, sources said.

She died on Saturday after she complained of nausea.

“She was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday and she died after developing complications on Saturday,” a senior district official said.

The family claimed that though the police registered a complaint against the accused, they did nothing to nab them untill Sunday.

After the death of the girl, her family members and villagers staged a dharna outside the hospital and in the village on Sunday demanding strict action against the culprits.

The villagers gave up their protests after Dharmapuri district collector S Malarvizhi promised that action will be taken against the accused.

The incident led to a political uproar with Opposition leader M K Stalin and other leaders demanding stringent punishment to the accused.
