While the government has appointed M Nageshwar Rao as the interim chief of CBI, sending Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana "on a leave", records at the Registrar of Companies shows that his wife, M Sandhya, made payments to a Kolkata-based firm.

The records show that Sandhya made payments of Rs 1.14 crores to Salt Lake City-based Angela Mercantiles Pvt Ltd. She had borrowed a sum of Rs 25 lakh in FY 2011 and subsequently gave loans between FY 2012-2014 in three tranches of Rs Rs 35.56 lakh in FY’12, Rs 38.27 lakh in FY’13 and Rs 40.29 lakh in FY’14.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Praween Agarwal, listed as a director of Angela Mercantiles, said: "Sandhya is the wife of Rao, who is a family friend who we know from his time as an officer in Odisha. What is wrong in giving a loan or accepting investments from a family friend?"
