TMC turned into private company: Suvendu Adhikari hits out at Mamata

Last Updated 17 August 2021, 07:06 IST

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing her of turning the Trinamool Congress (TMC) into a private limited company and betraying the trust of the people after coming to power in the State in 2011.

“Many of us have left the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joined the BJP because the TMC has turned into a private limited company and has lost its political credibility in West Bengal. In that party, no one gets any respect and freedom of speech apart from its leader and her nephew. We have the aim of rescuing Bengal from such a situation,” said Adhikari.

He was addressing a BJP rally at Haldia in East Medinipur district.

He further alleged that in the TMC “apart from the aunt and the nephew” (Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee) every other post in the party was a “lamppost.”

Adhikari, who will face off against Mamata in the Nandigram Assembly constituency, also hurled the “outsider” jibe at Mamata. Without directly naming the TMC supremo Adhikari urged the voters in Nandigram not to waste their votes on outsiders. He filed his nomination during the day.

“Please don’t waste your votes for outsiders who have betrayed your expectations and fooled you with false promises after coming to power in West Bengal in the 2011 Assembly elections,” said Adhikari.

Adhikari, who was once a trusted lieutenant of the TMC supremo recently switched over to the BJP and he will face off against his former mentor in a high stake in Nandigram, where the land agitation during the Left Front era played a key role in catapulting Mamata to power in the 2011 Assembly elections in West Bengal.

The outcome at Nandigram, a TMC bastion, will play a key role in deciding whether BJP tactics of engineering defection in the TMC will pay off or will it boomerang on the saffron party.

Meanwhile sources in the Election Commission (EC) said that the poll pannel was waiting for the reports from its observers and the State Government on the alleged attack on Mamata Banerjee at Nandigram and may take action against those responsible for the security lapse.
