Growing trade disputes cast a shadow over the first major diplomatic engagement between India and US after the Devyani Khobragade episode, as Washington on Thursday once again prodded New Delhi to have transparency in the country’s tax laws and tighten its Intellectual Property Rights regime.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Nisha Desai Biswal, on Thursday also used a speech at the American Centre in New Delhi to convey Washington’s concerns over domestic content requirement of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission of India as well as delays in granting regulatory approval to projects.

“We are concerned that domestic content requirements here are discouraging investment into India” Biswal said on the last day of her visit.
