Initiating a suo moto cognisance against Trinamool Congress Minister Becharam Manna for his remarks against the court on December 2 at Singur in Hooghly district, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday issued contempt rule against him and directed him to be present before the court.

Addressing a rally on Sunday the newly inducted Minister of State in Mamata Banerjee government said, “If the verdict (in the Supreme Court) is not in our favour we the people of Singur will grab the land and show how to make law. We will have to be prepared for those days”.

In a tone accusatory of the court, the MLA from Haripal in Hooghly district said, “You (People of Singur) have been suffering because Tata and CPM with the help of their loyal judges have defeated us at the High Court. We will not allow this to happen”.

CPM leader and senior advocate of the High Court Bikash Bhattacharya who brought the matter to the court’s notice, pleaded on behalf of the lawyers said that Manna’s comments, “directly interfered with administration of justice and there was an attempt to scandalise the image of the judiciary.”
