Honour killing: man killed for marrying classmate

In what appears to be a case of honour killing, a man brutally stabbed his newly-wed sister's husband to death in full public in the Beed district of Maharashtra.

According to reports, the incident took place around 5 pm on Wednesday outside the Aditya Engineering College in Telgaon area of Beed town when the young couple, Sumit Shivaji Waghare and his wife Bhagyashree, walked out of the college after appearing for their examinations.

Suddenly they were accosted by Bhagyashree’s brother Balaji Lande and his friend Sanket Wagh.

Before the couple could apprehend what was happening, Lande and his friend Wagh attacked Sumit with sharp weapons, left him bleeding and fled away.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the video, the girl is seen seeking help from the public even as Sumit is seen motionless in a pool of blood.

Some autorickshaw drivers helped shift Sumit to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“What was my crime? That I married the person I loved and who was my college mate? If the police don’t nab him soon, I shall end my life...What was my fault? What was his fault?,” a weeping Bhagyashree asked.

Sumit, hailing from Talkhed village, around 60 km from Beed, fell in love with Bhagyashree when they were in college. Even though both are from the same caste, the Lande family was opposed to the alliance.

A couple of months ago, they registered their marriage and also had rituals in a private ceremony.

Bhagyashree said they had received threats and complained to police but no action was taken.

The Beed police have launched a manhunt to nab the suspects.

Meanwhile, the Lande and Waghmare families along with their relatives and friends went to the office of District Superintendent of Police, Sreedhar Govindarajan, demanding action against the culprits.

The police persuade family members to perform the last rites of the victim.

Beed in Marathwada region is the home district of state's Women & Child Development Minister Pankaja Munde.
