Kerala bypoll campaigning hits an early peak

Campaigning for the by-election of Piravom Assembly constituency in Kerala which will be held on March 17 has hit an early peak with the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) and Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) concentrating all their energies here ahead of the crucial contest.

Leaders of both the coalitions are leading campaigns leaving no stone unturned to ensure victory for their candidates. While CPI (M) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan is leading the campaign for the LDF, the presence of chief minister Oommen Chandy and other ministers is the highlight of the UDF camp.

The main contestants of UDF and LDF have already held their constituency level conventions and candidates have started canvassing votes.

The BJP has also announced its candidate and the party has claimed that it would improve its votes this time. Votes received by the BJP candidates have been increasing steadily here.

The LDF threw a challenge to the UDF initially that the by-election would be a review of the nine month old UDF government’s rule, the UDF has accepted the challenge despite the dangers it possess to the future of the government in case it loses.
