Assam: Married woman raped by five

A married woman was allegedly raped by five youths who offered her a lift in eastern Assam's Nalbari district on Wednesday.

Police said the youths offered to drop her as she was returning home from a market on Wednesday evening in a village under Tihu police station. But the youths forcefully took her inside a jungle and allegedly raped her. Local who found her lying inside the jungle on Thursday morning with her hands tied informed the police.

The place where the incident took place is about 80km west of Guwahati.

Based on details provided by the victim, police detained two youths, Nurul Ali and Bakul Nath and seized the car. Three others have been identified as Kishore Mohan Das, Rupdhan Ali and Merajul Ali.

"The victim has been admitted in hospital and we are trying to arrest the three accused. We have registered a case and started an investigation," said a police official in Tihu police station.

Many local residents who gathered at the police station on Thursday morning demanded the immediate arrest of the other three accused and strict punishment to all those involved.
