Mizoram, Odisha get new governors

Last Updated 26 May 2018, 07:21 IST

Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan and former BJP Haryana chief Prof Ganeshi Lal were on Friday appointed governors of Mizoram and Odisha respectively.

Rajasekharan will succeed Lt General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma, who is completing his tenure on May 28 while Lal will take over the charge from Satyapal Malik, who is holding additional charge of Odisha. Malik has been holding the charge after S C Jamir's tenure ended in March, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.

The appointment of Rajasekharan comes in the midst of the saffron party facing a bypoll in an assembly constituency in Kerala. It is seen as BJP's ongoing move to revamp state units ahead of Lok Sabha polls where the central leadership is planning to bring new faces.

State leaders like M T Ramesh and K Surendran are considered to be front-runners for the post of state BJP president in Kerala while some sections are also looking at P Krishnadas as a possible contender.

BJP sources said Telangana and Tamil Nadu may also soon see a change in BJP presidents, as part of the revamp. Earlier this month, the BJP had appointed a chief for Andhra Pradesh.
