PM Modi urges MPs, parties to ask sharpest of questions in Parliament but allow govt to respond
As the Monsoon Session of Parliament got under way, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said all MPs and parties must ask the sharpest of questions but also allow the government to respond to them in a cordial environment.
Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament, Modi said his government favoured a meaningful debate – both inside the House as well as outside – and asked members to make practical suggestions that can help impart a fresh approach to the fight against Covid-19.
“Let this session be effective and dedicated to meaningful discussion. The people of the country want answers and the government is fully prepared to give those answers,” he said.
“I will urge all MPs and all the political parties to ask the sharpest of all questions and tough questions, but also allow the government to respond in a cordial environment. Democracy gets strengthened further if truth reaches the people. It bolsters their belief and the nation progresses at a faster pace,” the Prime Minister said.
He said the pandemic has the entire world and entire humanity in its grip and hence the Parliament should discuss it in a meaningful manner and on a priority basis.
“We want MPs to make all practical suggestions that could impart freshness to the fight against the pandemic and rectify shortcomings if any,” the prime minister said.
He urged the floor leaders to take time out on Tuesday evening so that he could share detailed information on the pandemic situation.
“I have been talking to the chief ministers from time to time. Discussions are happening on different forums. Since the Parliament is in session, I feel it will be beneficial for the floor leaders to meet and discuss it,” Modi said.
Opposition parties have closed ranks to take on the government on a range of issues from the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, the farmers’ protests against three farm laws and the latest revelations in the Pegasus snooping issue.
