Railways to ease congestion in tracks near stations

The Railways will build rail flyovers in major junctions to enable trains to enter the platform directly without waiting for long in the outskirts of the station.

The national transporter has identified 150 major junctions in its networks across the country where each train takes waiting time of around 10 minutes to 30 minutes before getting a signal to enter the station.

To begin with, 10 such flyovers will be built in some of the busiest stations, said a railway official.

One of the major complaints that the Railways receive from passengers is that despite the train reaching near stations on time, it is forced to wait on the outskirts for a long time before being allowed to enter the platforms.

To ease congestion, there is also a plan to build elevated platforms in some of the busy stations, where the stations faces space crunch to construct extra platforms, said the official.

Since the railways is modernising several of its major stations with private investments, it will not only add extra platforms, but also have separate entry and exit points on the line of airports.

As part of its improvement in infrastructure, the railways already started installing modern ETCS (European Train Control System) signalling between Gaziabad and Mughalsari on trial basis.

The modern signal system will enhance safety, increase capacity and improve punctuality and speed of the train, said the official.

Since ETCS is a modern and automatic signalling system, it will also reduce the congestion in rail network and increase the line capacity by 50%, the official said.
