Telangana Assembly to meet on Thursday

The newly elected members of the Telangana Legislative Assembly will meet on Thursday.

The Assembly will function for four days during which all the 119 members and one nominated MLA will be administered the oath by Governor E S L Narasimhan and speaker and deputy speaker will be elected.

The governor, who had issued a notice on January 7 summoning the Assembly to meet, will also address a joint session on January 19.

On Thursday, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and all TRS MLAs will pay homage to at the Telangana Martyrs Memorial at Gun Park opposite the Assembly complex before entering the Assembly.

On Wednesday, six-time legislator Mumtaz Ahmad Khan of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Mulsimeen was administered the oath as the pro tem speaker by the Governor at the Rajbhavan.

Mumtaz has been a Majlis MLA from Yakutpura in the Old City. He will administer the oath to the newly elected MLAs on Thursday.

Following which the schedule for the speaker's election would be announced and the nomination process would commence.

Names of several TRS leaders including Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy, E Rajender, Padma Devender Reddy (deputy speaker of the previous Assembly) and A Indrakaran Reddy are said to be under consideration for the post of speaker.

Meanwhile, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be meeting on Thursday morning to elect their leader.

The Congress has won 19 seats in the recent state elections.
