As Maharashtra's Covid-19 situation worsens, government data shows that more than 50 per cent of the fresh cases and the total active cases are from the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR) and neighbouring Pune and Nashik districts.

This reflects the stress on the state's public and private health infrastructure.

As of Monday morning, the total active cases in Maharashtra were 3,25,901 of which the Mumbai-Thane-Pune belt accounts for 1,71,585.

In the MMR, the twin districts of Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban account for 43,599 active cases while the neighbouring districts of Thane had 32,780 cases, Palghar had 3,361 cases and Raigad had 4,285 cases.

Pune, with 62,022 cases, has the largest number of active cases in India while Nashik has a total of 26,538 active cases.

Sunday’s numbers reflect that the state had 40,414 cases, of which MMR account for 12,319 while Pune and Nashik reported 8,324 and 3,613 cases, respectively.
