Militant killed in ongoing gunfight in Kashmir's Shopian

An unidentified militant was killed in an ongoing encounter with security forces in Dangam village of south Kashmir's Shopian district on Saturday.

A police official said the gunfight erupted after a joint team of Army’s 34 Rashtriya Rifle and J&K police launched a cordon-and- search-operation (CASO) in Dangam, Shopian, 55 km from here, on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter in which one militant has been killed so far.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was not known immediately.

The official said the operation is on in the area.
