A case of police brutality has come to the fore in Punjab’s Amritsar where a woman in her 30s was allegedly put on the rooftop of a police jeep and driven in the town before she fell off the roof on a sharp turn.

The woman has been admitted to a hospital in the holy city with multiple injuries. The Punjab women's commission has taken cognisance of the case after a video showed the woman on the rooftop of the police jeep being driven around on the streets.

The woman slipped from the roof of the jeep and fell badly on the road while the cops maneuvered a sharp turn on high speed.

Woman resists

The incident has exposed the brutal face of the state police. The police drove the woman despite knowing that a fall from a moving vehicle could cause death. The incident took place in Chawinda Devi village in the district.

According to sources, the cops had gone to pick up an accused in a case of land dispute.

As the man who was wanted was not there, the cops picked up the woman. The woman resisted and got on to the bonnet. The police have ordered a probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, both the ruling party Congress and Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have condemned the incident. SAD leader Virsa Singh Valtoha demanded strict action against guilty police officials.
