It has been a year and a half since we lost our pet. Till this day, we remember him fondly. Our face lights up with a smile whenever we recall how he would have reacted to certain situations. The bond between him and us is here to stay as we have attached our souls to those beautiful memories that bring pure joy. Devi Mahamaya in Markandeya Purana speaks about the attachments in the physical realm and why this bonding remains so deep that despite being severed off all physical ties, one can never get over thinking about them.
.
Once, there lived a king called Suratha who ruled his kingdom well. He treated his subjects just as he would treat his children. He was well known for his power and benevolence. He lost his kingdom to a weak ruler who defeated him easily. On returning to the palace, all his possessions were gone and his own ministers threw him out of his kingdom. Facing betrayal and wandering around the forest, he reached the ashram where he met a tradesman called Samadhi.
.
Samadhi stated that he was a successful tradesman but due to certain people cheating him, he lost much of his wealth. His own wife and children deserted him and went away. He wandered alone and reached this forest. As both Suratha and Samadhi were lamenting about their loss, they were also concerned about the welfare of their family, State and trade. Both asked Rishi Medha about the reason for their deep attachments towards their families despite being betrayed.
.
Rishi Medha explained that Suratha, meaning good chariot, (a strong body) and Samadhi, (holding together) both were good at their own individual tasks. Even though both humans and animals have the power of sight, smell, hearing etc... humans are slightly different as they have the power of choice depending on their interests and desires. This makes them unique and can create a reason for confusion as well. Making the right choice may differ among individuals as maya has its own illusions. Thus, rising above the web of moh and maya, a certain spiritual understating with strong body and a focused mind is required for leading a holistic life.
