WhatsApp users can now make voice, video call on desktops

Last Updated 04 March 2021, 12:35 IST

In December 2020, WhatsApp began testing the video and voice calling feature for its Desktop version. Now, the company has finally rolled out the calling feature to the general public in the latest update.

"Answering on a bigger screen makes it easier to work with colleagues, see your family more clearly on a bigger canvas, or free up your hands to move around a room while talking. To make desktop calling more useful, we made sure it works seamlessly for both portrait and landscape orientation, appears in a resizable standalone window on your computer screen and is set to be always on top so you never lose your video chats in a browser tab or stack of open windows," the company said.

Here's how to Make a WhatsApp voice call on the PC
Step 1: Open the individual chat with the contact you’d like to call.
Step 2: Click the Voice call icon (phone).
Step 3: During the call, users can mute or unmute the microphone by clicking the Microphone icon. To end a call, click End call.

To answer a voice call, users will see the notification on the screen. Users can just accept or reject it.

Here's how to make a WhatsApp video call on the PC
Step 1: Open the individual chat with the contact you’d like to call.
Step 2: Click the Video call icon (video camera).
During the call, users can mute or unmute the microphone by clicking the Microphone icon or turn the camera off or on by clicking the Camera icon. To end a call, click End call.

Here's how to switch between voice and video call
While on a voice call with a contact, the user can request to switch to a video call. The contact he/she voice calling can choose to click OK or Switch to switch the call or Cancel to decline.

For desktop calling, the system should run either Windows 10 64-bit version 1903 (or later version) or macOS v10.13 (or newer version). Also, for obvious reasons, it should have a mic and a camera.

For now, users can make one-to-one calling; the company is expected to bring group calling option in the near future.
