Bengaluru: For top Indian track and field athletes, at least in the first half of the 2025 season, the primary focus is the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Championships scheduled from April 21-24. Considering that their biggest assignment is less than a month away, only a handful of known names have signed up for the first Indian Grand Prix competition to be held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Kengeri here on Friday.
.
Among them, sprinter Amlan Borgohain (men’s 100m, 200m), Jyothi Yarraji (women’s 200m, 100m hurdles), jumpers Muhammed Anees Yahiya and Praveen Chithravel (both men’s long jump) will be the ones garnering most of the attention. With fewer stars, the young challengers and the second rung athletes will be eager to make mark.
.High hurdlers Jyothi Yarraji and Tejas Shirse win third straight gold in National Games.
Speaking about performance hunger, though the last two years haven't been to his liking, the 26-year-old Amlan of Assam will be hoping to get back into the groove as his personal best of 10.25 seconds (100m) and 20.52s (200m) came in 2022. However, Amlan began this year with an effort of 10.43s that fetched him only a bronze at the National Games in Dehradun in February.
.
As for hurdler Yarraji, one of the latest track stars to emerge from the country, the day will be about bettering her own standards as the Andhra Pradesh girl has her eyes set on the Athletics World Championships to take place in Tokyo later this year. With the qualifying mark set at 12.73s for 100m hurdles, Yarraji will be hoping to cut a few milliseconds off of her personal best of 12.78, also the national record.
.
In the men’s long jump, seasoned campaigner Yahiya will battle it out with national triple jump record-holder Chithravel, who won silver at last week’s 4th Indian Open Jumps Competition behind Abdulla Aboobacker.
.
For the hosts, sprinters Daneshwari AT and Sneha SS, high jumpers Abhinaya S Shetty and Jesse Sandesh will spearhead Karnataka’s challenge from a team comprising 30 athletes.
.
The one-day event will see men and women compete in 10 events each - track: 100m, 200m, 100m/ 110m hurdles, 800m, 5000m; field: long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, javelin throw.
