Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy | Rahul and Sudharsan fall in quick succession, India 92/2 at lunch

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal had put on 84 for the opening wicket before England hit back with two quick wickets at the stroke of lunch.

India made 92 for two after being put in to bat by England in the opening match of the five-Test Tendulkar-Anderson series at Leeds.

KL Rahul (42) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (42 not out) had put on 84 for the opening wicket before England dismissed Rahul and debutant B Sai Sudharsan (0) in quick succession at the stroke of lunch.

Rahul, who got his opening slot back after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, was in his usual sturdy self, showing fine judgment and technical nous, until he fatally decided to play a loose drive off Brydon Carse for Joe Root to take a catch at slip.

The pressure then got to Sudharsan, as from the last ball before lunch, England captain Ben Stokes found a leading edge, with Jamie Smith taking the catch behind the stumps to send the 23-year-old back to the pavilion without opening his account.

Earlier India gave a maiden Test call-up to Sudharsan while seasoned middle-order batter Karun Nair and all-rounder Shardul Thakur came back into the playing XI.

Meanwhile, players from both teams along with on-field umpires observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims of the recent tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.
