Bengaluru: Red Bull Racing have endured a tough start to the season with a car that has been strenuous to handle, undergoing overheating, degradation, light system and wheelspin issues.
.
However, the four-time world champion Max Verstappen has managed to limit their damage, defying all predictions, pushing Red Bull to third spot in the Constructors' Championship and is 22 points behind the leader Oscar Piastri and nine behind Lando Norris, both from McLaren, in the Drivers’ Championship.
.
Despite the man and the machine not completely in sync at Red Bull, the 27-year-old has managed to snatch two races – Japan and Imola.
.
The Dutchman’s latest smile came when he drove his Red Bull to a convincing victory at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix last weekend.
.
Former F1 driver and pundit David Coulthard said that Verstappen's desire and hunger to win could potentially navigate his team out of the woes despite them having Red Bull-sized issues on and off the track.
.
"Max is a phenomenon. He is an exceptional Grand Prix driver. He is uncompromising and wants to win. In Formula One, there are no points for being a fan's favourite but there are a lot of points for doing everything it takes within the rules to win and that's what Verstappen tries to do," Coulthard said during media interaction arranged by FanCode.
.
Red Bull have been struggling with their second driver and have been under some tremendous pressure with McLaren already 148 points ahead in the Constructors.
.
"Who is the second driver is the big question. The Constructors, obviously will need both drivers scoring, and I don't have an answer. If Red Bull had the answer, they would have that driver in the car. They like Yuki (Yuki Tsunoda), he is quite focused on himself. However, he's not had the easiest of introductions, so let's see how he develops."
.
While McLaren have started their season in fifth gear with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris pumping in good drives like it has been nothing, they will have a challenge on their hands with the side not having won in Monaco since 2008, when Lewis Hamilton drove them to the title.
.
Talking about McLaren’s chances this weekend, Coulthard said that they have been the fastest on the grid this season and could potentially break 17-year-old Monaco jinx.
.
"Well, they have a quick package, they have two great drivers and they have got to believe that they can qualify on the front row and if they do that, they have a good chance to win the race. They are in a strong position to take it," he concluded.
