Liberia fire football coach

Last Updated 21 February 2012, 10:15 IST

The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has fired 56-year-old Italian coach Roberto Landi from the national team.

The LFA made the announcement Monday, two days after the national team, the Lone Stars suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of the Nigerian national team Super Eagles in the presence of thousands of Liberians, including President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Coach Landi's dismissal is apparently based on his poor performances in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and quite recently with the homegrown Super Eagles of Nigeria, Xinhua reported.

Meanwhile, former Lone Star player Thomas Kodjo has been named caretaker coach, as the team prepares for the African Nations Cup qualifier against the Brave Warriors of Namibia Feb 29.
