<p>Bengaluru: All eyes were on Fynbos who entered as the favourite to win the Zavaray S Poonawalla Bangalore Summer Derby. And the three-year-old filly put up a last-gasp show to walk away as the champion horse here at the Bangalore Turf Club on Sunday. </p>.<p>In what appeared to be a slow start, Fynbos, from the stables of trainer Pesi Shroff, reaped the benefits of a well-calculated 2000m race. In the chasing pack of a 16-contender field from the beginning, jockey Trevor Patel ensured Fynbos stayed clear of the traffic up until the home bend before the champion horse responded to his master's call with gusto. </p>.<p>Switching gears in the final straight stretch, the filly’s strong gallop took her over the finish line first to capture the fourth title out of her six runs so far. This is the first win for the KN Dhunjibhoy-owned champion in the 2000m competition, with all the previous three coming in 1600m races. </p>.<p>“Before turning into the home stretch, I just wanted to keep her calm and give her all the chances,” said an elated Trevor after the race. </p>.Fynbos, Sovereign King fancied.<p>“She quickened immediately and took off well in the end,” added the rider who didn’t wait to cross the finish line to raise his hands up in celebration. </p>.<p>In the richest event of the Bengaluru summer races, with total stakes of Rs 2.50 crore, Prasanna Kumar-trained Prokofiev, ridden by Suraj Narredu, finished second while Padmanabhan-trained, Miracle Star, who was piloted by Neeraj Rawal, took the third spot ahead of the fourth-placed Red Bishop, ridden by Sandesh. </p>.<p>Though the sun and clouds played hide and seek, the on-lookers who came out in numbers heaved a sigh of relief with rain staying away. As the hype over derby reached its peak at its scheduled time of 4.00 pm, Shroff’s another ward, out of the three he fielded, Matisse came charging out of the gate to maintain lead for up to more than the half-way mark. </p>.<p>However, as the A Prakash-ridden horse began to fade away, Fynbos overtook Prokofiev to seize the lead even as Miracle Star pushed hard to finish among the top-3. </p>.<p>Earlier, in the Indian Pattern Committee Trophy, Akshay Kumar-ridden Money Bags - which was considered as the day’s best betting proposition in the card of eight events - lived up to its top billing to emerge victorious. </p>
