Won't take KKR lightly, says Kohli

“I am actually surprised that they have lost two games in a row because they are really a strong side,” the Royal Challengers batsman told newsmen. “We will not take them lightly.

Obviously now they have lost two, their confidence might be little low. We will try and put pressure on them from ball one and get a hold on the game. It’s very important to start well as they are a very explosive side and if you give them a chance, they can hurt you very badly.

“Tomorrow’s game is very important for us as we have only four matches to play. Obviously, AB (de Villiers) not being in the side is a big loss for us. I have to take more responsibility; I am taking it as a challenge. We have to step up and put up a good batting show now that AB is not there in the team.”

The Challengers’ fielding was less than acceptable in Friday’s opening-match loss to the Warriors. “We have been working on the fielding really hard in the IPL and also during this tournament,” the stylish right-hander pointed out. “We have had some new drills so that everyone takes lots of interest and enjoys the fielding sessions. We try and put our best effort in the field and we have been improving. A couple of lapses in the field have cost us the game but overall, the energy and keenness in the field is important.”

Viewed as a future captain, both of his franchise and of the national team at some stage, Kohli revealed, “I like talking to Dan (Vettori) on the field, giving inputs on the batsmen and discussing field placements. We keep discussing the game and it’s really nice that Dan is ready to listen.

“The coach asked me to lead the team in the fielding and just keep the energy up on the field. I try to do my best; if you lead by example, everyone comes along and there is a nice environment on the field. I really enjoy whetever role they give me and their faith in me has helped a lot.”
