While the JD(S) and Congress were trounced in the Lok Sabha elections, the coalition partners have managed to get a majority in two urban local bodies (ULB), leaving one for the BJP in the district. The elections results were declared on Friday.

The elections were held for KR Nagar Town Municipal Council (TMC), Bannur TMC and Nanjanagud City Municipal Council (CMC). While the Congress obtained a clear majority in KR Nagar TMC, JD(S) emerged as the largest party in Bannur TMC. However, the BJP obtained a majority of the seats in Nanjangud.

The coalition partners -- JD(S) and Congress -- faced the elections independently.

The elections were held for a total of 77 seats from all the three ULBs in the district. A total of 31 Congress candidates, 23 JD(S), 18 BJP candidates and five others are elected.

In Nanjangud, the elections were held in 31 wards. With 15 seats, the BJP emerged as the largest party. BJP needs the support of another councillor and its leaders are hopeful of obtaining the support of the independents. Three independent candidates are elected.

Setback to Sa Ra Mahesh

In KR Nagar, Congress party obtained a clear majority with 14 seats out of 23.

The JD(S) and BJP managed to obtain eight and one seats, respectively. It is a setback to Tourism Minister Sa Ra Mahesh, who represents KR Nagar Assembly segment, as the Congress obtained a clear majority.

In Bannur, the election was held for 23 seats. While seven Congress candidates were elected, 12 from the JD(S) and two from the BJP were elected. Two independent candidates have been elected as councillors.
