Especially children are the main victims of dog bites.<br /><br />The authorities concerned seem to have not bothered to check the menace, as the statics of the past four years reveal. <br /><br /> It is really sad that over the years the number of cases have increased and no measures have been taken to check the menace.<br /><br />In 2008, the number of cases recorded is 6,664. But the following year, there was a steep increase and 8,572 persons were bitten by stray dogs. In 2010, the situation grew worse and 11,139 people were attacked by the canines. <br /><br />When compared to 2010, the number of dog bits have reduced. But still the number existing is too high.<br /><br />A boy was bitten by a dog in the last month in Malur. People are even scared to walk on the roads as they can be attacked by dogs any time.<br /><br />“Town Municipal Council and City Municipal Council should take action to bring this problem into control. Getting treatment for dog bite is not a solution at all, instead the menace should be prevented. One of the ways to prevent it is not to let the children out on roads. Parents should think over it seriously,” said District Supervisor C Kuppuswamy.<br /><br />A resident said that, incidents of dangerous stray dogs being beaten to death is also on the rise. When other dogs watch this, there is chance of them acting more ferocious. <br /><br />Snake bites<br /><br />The number of snake bites in the district have also increased. In 2008 there were 282 cases and in 2009 it rose to 291. But in 2010 the snake bite cases increased to 403. <br /><br />As there was no action taken, last year 468 persons were bit by snakes. <br /><br />Within three years, four persons have died due to snake bites. Snake bite is more dangerous than dog bite and it is almost unexpected. <br /><br />These cases have been found mostly in rural areas. Preventive measures should be taken to tackle the problems, say residents.<br /></p>
