KUD dean taken into custody

The Hubballi police took a professor and her husband into custody on Monday following a complaint from a PhD student of Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD).

According to the police, the accused are Prof Noorjahan Ganihar, dean of the Education department at KUD, and her husband Nadeem Ganihar.

The professor detained the complainant Shadia, a PhD student, and forced her to give a written statement that she would withdraw the complaints of bribery against the professor made to the university vice chancellor and registrar, said a senior police officer.

The police have registered a case against Prof Noorjahan under Sections 506, 341 and 441 read with 33 of Indian Penal Code. On Monday, she was taken into custody when the professor had come to the Lokayukta office in Dharwad.

Ejaz Ahmed Naiku from Jammu and Kashmir and Shadia A M Khan from Hubballi were pursuing PhD in Education under the guidance of Noorjahan. They complained to the vice chancellor and registrar of KUD that their guide had demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh to ensure that the PhD work is completed at the earliest. They also submitted a CD that had a recording of the conversation between them and the guide.

The Lokayukta took up a suo motu case against the professor.

Meanwhile, Noorjahan obtained anticipatory bail in the Lokayukta court on Saturday.
