JOIN USScrapping old autos, levying green tax and introducing open permit system, are among a slew of measures suggested by the Centre for Instrastructure, Sustainable Transport & Urban Planning (CiSTUP) of Indian Institute of Science, to keep the proliferation of autorickshaws under check.
The suggestion comes as autorickshaws, which constitute just three per cent of vehicles plying on City streets, however, account for nearly 13 per cent of trips which people make.
Stating that autorickshaws majorly contribute to traffic chaos, the study, has exhorted the government for making auto cab permits non-transferable, except in case of legal heirs.
Further, it has stipulated eligibility criteria for procurement of permits (like possession of valid auto cab DL-Badge and maximum permits); equitable distribution, self-employment and better accountability (on part of auto owners/drivers), special licence and rules for organised fleet-based services.
Pointing out that 74 per cent of the people are not happy about the current locations of autostands, the study has said auto stands must have proper signage. It has also called for investment in R&D to improve vehicle design/technology to check pollution (noise and air) level by the three-wheelers.
