48 accident-prone areas identified in Chikkamagaluru

A total of 48 accident-prone areas in Chikkamagaluru district have been identified. Among them, 15 are in Chikkamagaluru town.

The places have been identified based on the statistics of accident cases reported in a particular place the district in the last three years.

According to the district police, 733 accidents had occurred in 2016 and 161 people lost their lives and 946 persons were injured in these incidents. In 2017, 745 accidents had taken place and 142 persons had lost their lives and 1,108 persons have been injured.

In 2018, the district had witnessed 684 accidents and 141 persons lost their lives and 953 persons were injured.

The district police, department of transport and PWD officials have jointly inspected the accident-prone spots already and are taking measures to check accidents. The issue was also discussed in the recently held road safety committee meeting.

RTO Murugendra B Shirolkar told DH, “We have conducted a study on the accident-prone areas in Chikkamagaluru. Necessary measures will be taken to instal warning boards, blinkers, cat’s eye and others on the road to check the accidents. Measures will also be taken to widen the road on a few stretches”.

The density of vehicles was not high 15 years ago. The roads were laid based on the density of vehicles then. At least 25,000 vehicles are registered in the district in a year. Roads should be improved based on the density of vehicles now.

Shirolkar said, “The accidents are increasing on hairpin curves and roads leading to hilly ranges. We have already discussed about introducing reforms to check accidents in the identified accident-prone areas with PWD and police personnel. An action plan will be prepared shortly and it will be placed before road safety committee for approval”.

Superintendent of Police Harish Pande said additional SP, RTO and PWD engineers have been asked to submit a report on accident-prone areas. Necessary measures will be taken to introduce reforms based on the report, he added.
