Last Updated 07 April 2019, 19:22 IST

The District SVEEP Committee organised a human chain from Talapady to Sasihitlu, as a part of its ‘Praja Sangama’ programme to ensure 100% voter turnout.

Flagging off the programme at Bengre beach, Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Sasikanth Senthil S said Mangalureans have a tryst with the sea.

“The SVEEP Committee, therefore, came up with an idea to form a human chain on the beaches of Talapady, Someshwara, Ullal, Kotekar, Surathkal and Sasihithlu to spread the awareness on voting. The human chain is part of the celebration of election, which is a festival of the Constitution, where people can participate without any discrimination,” the officer explained.

He thanked the local villagers, educational institutions and the beach development authority for their roles in making the event successful.

‘Improve turnout’

District SVEEP Committee chairman and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr R Selvamani said that the objective behind the human chain will be fulfilled if the voting percentage in the upcoming Lak Sabha election improves as compared to the voter turnout in 16th Lok Sabha polls.

Thousands of people, comprising general public, officials from government departments, NCC cadets and students took part in the human chain. Kabaddi matches, Yakshagana and group dance by children were also held as a part of Praja Sangama. Voters also took a pledge on the occasion.
