Last Updated 14 December 2018, 14:31 IST

As many as 6,053 of the 29,518 villages do not have burial/cremation grounds, the Revenue department has submitted to Karnataka High Court.

The government’s submission was in response to a PIL by Mohammed Iqbal who sought the court’s direction to the state government for reserving space for burial/cremation in all the villages. A division bench, headed by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S Sujatha heard the petition on Wednesday. Advocate for the government Shivaprabhu Hiremath submitted,“Burial grounds are required in 281 towns. The deputy commissioners have been told to purchase land in this regard. Rs 10 crore has also been reserved for the same.”

The court questioned the government counsel whether Rs 10 crore would be enough for purchasing land. and observed that the affidavit was incomplete.
