Mangalore University students wearing hijab denied entry into college, approach DC

There is no connection between hijab controversy in different parts of the state and at University College, the girls said

The controversy over hijab that resurfaced three days ago at the University College here refuses to die down, with 16 students seeking the intervention of Dakshina Kannada (DK) deputy commissioner Dr Rajendra K V on Monday.

The DC, who held a meeting with the students, also spoke to college principal Dr Anasuya Rai and collected information on the rules of the college.

Rajendra, in turn, apprised students about the High Court’s order and the decision taken at the Syndicate meeting of the Mangalore University.

“I have asked the students to follow the decision of the university Syndicate and the court orders. I told them to ensure that there is no law and order problem inside the college campus. It is the educational institutions which frame guidelines based on court verdict. The district administration will not interfere. I have asked the principal to make arrangements for students to remove headscarves inside the college restroom,” he told mediapersons.

The students told mediapersons that DC was helpless as the decision was taken by the Syndicate.

“The Syndicate did not take a decision based on the court’s verdict. They were under pressure from ABVP. “It appears that ABVP’s pressure tactics are more important than our education. The issue could have been solved at the university level,” Ghousia, a student, said.

The students had even met former minister and MLA U T Khader. “He failed to respond to us properly. The religious leaders and student organisations should help us secure justice. The issue will drag on if we approach the court. Already, we have lost much attendance,” Ghousia said.
