Sabarimala: Preserve traditions, says Heggade

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade said that the “tradition of a few traditions” should be preserved.

He was responding to a query on the entry of women of all ages to the Sabarimala temple at Dharmasthala here on Tuesday.

The Dharmadhikari said men undertake 48 days of “vratha” before leaving for Sabarimala Temple. They remain away from their houses and all the worldly pleasures. These “vrathas” are observed for self-control.

When one fails in self-control, it may result in inequality, and also result in #MeToo incidents. There are a few restrictions in foreign countries as well. It is better to retain the age-old traditions and maintain their sanctity,” he felt.

Misuse of system

More than women being allowed to enter Sabarimala temple, Heggade apprehended misuse of the system in the name of equality.

Some traditions and customs should be retained as they are, Heggade said, and added that women need not offer puja at the Sabarimala temple alone.
