CERT-In flags security vulnerabilities in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox browsers

State-run Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has flagged several security vulnerabilities in two top internet browser applications Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Successful exploitation of these security loopholes could allow a hacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system with the Google Chrome browser.

In computers with Mozilla Firefox, bad actors can perform spoofing attacks, steal sensitive information, execute code and cause Denial of Service (DoS) attacks on targeted computers.

For the uninitiated, a spoofing attack is a type of cyberattack where a bad actor impersonates a person or company executive to gain access to sensitive information on the system.

Some of the vulnerabilities detected in Chrome are Skia (an open-source 2D graphics library), V8 and Extensions APIs.

Google has rolled out the new update with security patches and bug fixes to the Chrome app for desktops-- Chrome v133.0.6943.53 (Linux) and v133.0.6943.53/54 (for Windows and Mac).

Similarly, Mozilla Firefox has released a new update to fix the security loopholes in its browser app.

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox users are advised to update their respective browsers to the latest version to safeguard themselves from cyber attacks.

In a related development, Google has introduced a new user privacy-centric update that further improves the anti-theft features of the phone. Identity Check will offer enhanced protection for Android phone owner's critical account and device settings.

Once the Identity Check feature is turned on, the device will require explicit biometric authentication to access certain sensitive resources when you’re outside of trusted locations.

Further, Identity Check also enables enhanced protection for Google Accounts on all supported devices and additional security for Samsung Accounts on One UI 7 eligible Galaxy devices.

With this new feature, it will be much more difficult for an unauthorised attacker to take over accounts signed in on the device.
