Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released on Monday for the 88-year-old pontiff.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at St. Peter's Square, Roman Catholic cardinals decided, setting the stage for a solemn ceremony that will draw leaders from around the world.

Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was ordained a priest in the Jesuit order in 1969.

In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI stepped down from his post citing age and deteriorating health. This is when Pope Francis took over the duties and became the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, the first from Latin America and the first Jesuit to hold the post.

Francis led the Catholic Church into a new era of more acceptance over philosophical matters which earlier were frowned upon.

However, his net worth is not as high as one would imagine considering his position, a Marca report said. The publication mentioned that his wealth was nowhere close to that of the previous popes.

Francis renounced any type of wages from the church or luxury from the time he took the position of leader of the Catholic Church, the report added.

He even refused to accept the monthly wages of $32,000, and decided to donate the amount to church, put it in a trust or pass it to a family member, or simply use it to endow a foundation, it said.

The publication further stated that Pope Francis never received money from the church, even before being named as the new pope. He has always remained true to his Jesuit philosophy, the Vatican confirmed.

However, despite all of this, Pope Francis’ estimated worth is $100 million and is believed to have many assets that come with the job, Marca stated.

His income counts as a part of his net worth, even if he did not use the money received from the Catholic Church. The report mentioned that the Pope had five cars at his disposal, further adding on to the fact that the Catholic Church has a huge net worth just from the assets they possess.
